John Thompson received a BFA from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, majoring in painting. He works as a Painter, Illustrator and as a Professor of Art at Syracuse University.

His work has been featured in Art Direction magazine, Communications Arts magazine and Step by Step Graphics. He was included in The Illustrator in America 1860-2000, by Walt Reed. He has won gold and silver medals from the Society of Illustrators, the New Jersey Art Director's Club, the Denver Art Director's Club, the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles and the CEBA Award for Communication Excellence in Black Publishing and Advertising, as well as Awards of Excellence from Communication Arts Magazine and Print Magazine.

A select list of his clients include Scholastic Books, Dial Books for Children, Harper/Collins Publishing, The Creative Company, The U.S. Air Force, NASA, The Adolph Coors Company, Busch Beer, Allendale Insurance, Syracuse University, Mobil Mystery Theater, Sports Illustrated and Playboy Magazine.

Selected group shows include 200 Years of American Illustration; Miami University's 50th Anniversary Exhibition of Outstanding Graduates; Reflections at the Aldrich Museum; Selected Works at the Mendenhall Gallery, Pasadena, CA; Syracuse University Faculty Exhibition at the Lowe Art Gallery in Syracuse, NY and The Syracuse University Florence Center Faculty Exhibition at the United States Consulate in Florence, Italy.

Selected one person exhibitions include Recent Works at the American Museum of Illustration, New York, NY; Afghan Freedom Fighters at the Mason Gross School of Art, New Brunswick, NJ, and the Department of State, Washington DC; The Liquid Trap at the Zimmerli-Voorhees Museum, New Brunswick, NJ; and a three man exhibition, Places Near and Far at the Wyckoff Gallery in Wyckoff, NJ, featured his Morocco Series. John has received two fellowships from the State of New Jersey, including designation of Distinguished Artist.

John is a member of the Society of Illustrators and has served as the Chairman of the 34th Annual Exhibition of American Illustration, Chairman of the Air Force Art Program from 1991-1994, and is presently Chairman of The Educators Symposium.

In 1998-1999 John was Professor of Painting and the Chair of the Studio Arts Program at Syracuse University, Florence, Italy.
